Message Why is it so hard to beleive that there are some oils that can allow a longer drain period? New BMWs are only supposed to get oil chnges once a year becaseu of the oil they use...
Nwe Saabs are the same way, apparently you didnt knwo that...

With normal oil I agree, 3K miles is as far as you want to go, especially with a car like ours.

FROM RedLine to address yoru questions about detonation and a bit more about the oil:
"use the most stable synthetic lubricant base stocks available and formulate our products for wear protection and friction reduction across a wide range of engine operating conditions. Red Line lubricants are unique because they contain polyester base stocks, the only lubricant base stock type that withstands the incredible heat present in the hot sections of jet engines"

"Because of the robust polyester base stock and high-performance anticorrosive additive package in Red Line oils, they are ideal for use in street-driven vehicles at extended drain intervals. Red Line recommends oil changes for engines that are in good condition and do not see frequent starts without warm-ups or short-trips"

"Red Line has a complete line of race oils strictly for use in racing applications. They differ from the Motor Oils in that they contain no detergents and consequently have a slightly better ability to reduce friction, but they are not suitable for long-term street use which sees some low-temperature operation. "

"Even though Red Line Race Oils are straight grades, their low-temperature properties make them exceptional multigrades. Red Line Race Oils allow 2-4% more power than an oil of similar viscosity, while providing much more protection. Each reduction in viscosity grade allows 1-2% more power. To reduce the chance of detonation, our race oils contain very few detergents and are not recommended for street use"

That shoudl answer all your questions. If you still dont Understand Ill explain it in my own words...
